When Less Is More

When it comes to peace and serenity, simplicity is the ultimate way to get there. We all know what happens when life gets complicated. We’re cranky and stressed. We may overeat. Before we know it, we’re driving poorly and may even have some road rage.

Why does this happen to us? We live in such a high-tech world it can be hard to stay grounded. Our modern lives lead us to believe that more is better. More possessions. More things to do. But the truth is, the simpler life is, the happier we are.

Simplicity is better. Our possessions don’t necessarily bring us happiness. Not to mention the fact that too many things can lead to clutter which can lead to stress.

Instead, try not to be so focused on buying things. Do you REALLY need new clothes, or are the ones you have just fine?

Declutter. If you want to achieve serenity, one of the first things you should do is get rid of your excess possessions. Scale the entire house.

If you haven’t used or worn the item in over a year, it is safe to assume that you don’t need it.

Dream a little. Perhaps we collect and buy things because we feel something is missing? When you close your eyes, what do you see? Do you tend to start sentences with “I wish I could”… Some people dream of spending time in Europe. Others want to start their own business.

If you have dreams, why not turn them into goals? Instead of spending your time worrying about your possessions, be proactive in living the life you desire.

Decorate. When it comes to decorating, simplicity also can be your ally. When you walk into a cluttered room, how does it make you feel? Do you feel content and relaxed, or do you feel a little stressed? When you keep your surfaces clean and keep other decorations to a minimum, this makes your home feel more comfortable and relaxing. If you have a lot of extra, don’t be afraid to get rid of some things.

Be in nature. To help make your environment more serene, it also helps to bring some elements of nature indoors. You don’t even need to spend money. You can collect leaves, branches, flowers, etc and use them to make your own decorations. You can find some evergreen branches and place them in a vase in the winter. You can pick wildflowers and use them to decorate your table.

Nature is always relaxing and bringing some of these things indoors can remind you of that.
